Things like the intensity, duration, and diet can cause periods of exhaustion during physical exertion.  If you are new to a particular activity you may find that your tire quickly.  If the intensity or the duration of an activity is too great, then your body will not be able to supply you with the oxygen and/or energy fast enough for you to continue activity.  What you ate and how much of it well in advance before physical exertion can also cause exhaustion. To perform mechanical work, the body needs fuel, which goes through a chemical process to provide the body with energy and that energy comes from food we eat.
