How are passive range of motion (ROM) exercises done?

Passive ROM exercises are passive stretches where a partner, a machine, or some type of pressure is used to help an individual move a joint through its full available range of motion. Individuals themselves can also passively move a limb to exercise a joint. An example of a passive stretch is ankle rotation where a partner takes a client’s ankle with one hand in order to stabilize it and then slowly rotates the client’s foot inward and outward with their other hand.
