To perform helicopter with bands, stand facing the bands, so the affixed location is in front of you. Extend your arms so they are parallel with the ground and you have a 90 degree forward flexion in the shoulder. Keep your elbows straight and open your arms out to the side so they are slightly wider than shoulder width. Grasping the bands rotate your trunk from left to right. Make sure to engage the core and the low back and use your obliques to rotate your body from side to side so that you are alternating pointing your left hip and then your right hip towards the source of the band. Keep your elbows straight and your arms in a forward flexed position, parallel to the ground. This exercise works the deltoid muscles responsible for keeping your arms up, as well as your core and obliques, which is a key muscle group for speed and efficiency in the water. The stronger the core and obliques, the stronger the rotation in the water, which will increase your efficiency and improve your propulsion with each stroke.
