Should I be running while training intensely for a meet?

Running or cardio should be kept very light or performed not at all. Weightlifting is very intense speed and power sport. It requires maximal strength, speed, power and agility to compete well. Long distance running may decrease peak and maximal power outputs depending on length and intensity of the run. Some light cardio may help with warm ups or recovery periods, but during competition preparation your workouts should be primarily focused on improving technique, power and speed.
