How can training at altitude help a distance runner get more stamina?

Running at higher altitude helps distance runners by boosting the amounts of red blood cells that flow through their body. An increased number of red blood cells means that more oxygen is pumping through the heart and lungs, which increases endurance, performance, and max VO2. The distance training goal is to raise the anaerobic threshold, so a runner can run aerobically at a faster pace for a longer time. Running at altitude improves the athlete's oxygen uptake by increasing the ability to assimilate, transport, and utilize oxygen. When the distance runners who have trained at high altitudes race at lower altitudes, they feel the greatest benefit due to the boosted number of red blood cells.
