How can the proper use of periodization help track and field performance?

Periodization is the process of putting an athlete's or teams' season into (daily, weekly and monthly) building blocks (cycles). A certain amount of volume, work, and intensity are planned for each cycle. Typically, the earlier in the training cycle the more volume (training load) will be done by the athlete at lower levels of intensity. As the season progresses the cycles begin to change by lowering the volume of the workouts while increasing the intensity. The lightening of the training load and the corresponding increase in the intensity of the workouts helps the athlete feel more recovered and fresh, which helps increase the performance in both workouts and competitions. College and professional teams use this method of scheduling to ensure that the athletes perform at their best at the right times of the season.
