What should I know about taking deferoxamine?

You need to know that you should not take vitamin C while being treated with deferoxamine unless directed to do so by the doctor giving you the deferoxamine. The actions of vitamin C are complex: people with iron overload often have low levels of vitamin C because iron oxidizes the vitamin; vitamin C can enhance the iron-chelating process; high doses of vitamin C can facilitate iron deposition in tissue (especially the heart).  That's why you should ask your doctor if you need to take extra vitamin C and how much to take.
