How is ageusia diagnosed?

The first step in diagnosing ageusia is a physical exam that includes a review of your medical history. Tell your doctor as much as you can about the details and history of your ageusia. Your doctor may also test your sense of taste by placing drops of different substances on your tongue. These substances test your ability to differentiate the five different taste categories: salty, bitter, sour, sweet, or savory. Sometimes your doctor may need more specialized tests, such as a computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan, to check for the cause of your ageusia.
