Are there alternative treatments for ankyloglossia?

Dr. Jeanne Morrison, PhD
Family Practitioner

The only alternative to surgery that can be used to treat ankyloglossia is to simply allow your child to age. In many cases, the tissue that is placed too far forward on the tongue will recede as the child ages. There is a risk to doing this, however, as surgery becomes more difficult for an older child. There is also risk to any surgical procedure, no matter how simple it may be. It is best to discuss your options with your doctor before making a decision.

Many individuals have been referred to my office by a medical or dental professional with a request that orofacial myofunctional therapy be provided to "stretch" the frenulum through exercises. In some cases, it is successful, but only in the case of a slightly taut frenum or one with a borderline concern. Proper assessment by a child's dentist or physician is crucial to determine the likelihood of improvement, and thus the appropriateness for referral.
