Because experts have not figured out what causes thyroid cysts, it is hard to say with certainty what increases your risk for developing them. However, your risk for developing thyroid nodules or lumps in general appears to increase if your diet does not contain enough iodine; if you have another thyroid condition, such as chronic inflammation; or if thyroid nodules run in your family. The normal process of aging may also increase your risk for developing thyroid nodules, since they are more common in older people. Women are also more likely than men to develop thyroid nodules.
