How do thyroid cysts affect the body?

Most thyroid cysts have no affect on the body. They are usually benign or noncancerous. Ordinarily, they are only cause for concern if they become large enough to interfere with other structures in the neck, such as if they cause trouble breathing or swallowing. In rare cases, a cyst may contain solid material in addition to fluid, and this could be a sign that the cyst is having a more serious impact on the body. If this is the case, your doctor will want to conduct tests to rule out more serious conditions.
