How do other illnesses affect thyroid cysts?

Nobody knows for sure what causes thyroid cysts or thyroid nodules (lumps) in general. People with a condition known as Hashimoto's disease, which is characterized by inflammation and incorrect functioning of the thyroid gland, might be at increased risk for thyroid nodules. Some experts think iodine deficiency, or not getting enough iodine in your diet, can also contribute to the development of thyroid nodules.
