Thyroid cysts are usually not serious. The fluid-filled sacs are usually benign or noncancerous. In rare cases, the cysts contain solid material in addition to fluid, and this may be cause for concern. Your doctor can confirm that the cyst is benign by conducting a simple biopsy. Your doctor might also use an imaging procedure called an ultrasound to look at the shape and structure of the cyst. Occasionally, a large cyst will press against other parts of the neck, causing difficulty swallowing or breathing or making your voice hoarse, but this is rare.

Thyroid cycts can be serious. Thyroid cycts must be evaluated to determine their potential for harm. True, or simple, thyroid cysts are benign. However, many "cystic" nodules have a solid mass component, which may not be benign.
