Could a thyroid problem cause infertility?

Both overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) and underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) can cause infertility. The thyroid gland serves as the body's metabolism center and plays a key role in fetal development. Thyroid hormone passes from mother to fetus through the umbilical cord blood. An abnormal thyroid has been connected to a higher rate of miscarriage and a reduced rate of conception as well as maternal and neonatal adverse outcomes. The Endocrine Society recommends including thyroid testing in routine prenatal lab work.
