If you have persistent vocal hoarseness, you should quit smoking and stop drinking alcohol. For the duration of your hoarseness, you will also need to talk as little as possible. The cause of hoarseness may require additional lifestyle changes. For example, someone with gastroesophageal reflux will need to reform their diet to restrict acidic and spicy foods. Singers will need to improve their technique in order to prevent future damage.
