How is radiation used to treat throat cancer?

Radiation therapy uses x-rays to kill cancer cells. External radiation therapy is when the x-rays come from a machine outside of the body. Internal radiation therapy is when the radioactive material is placed inside of your body at the cancer site. Radiation therapy is an effective treatment for most types of throat cancer. In some cases, it may be the only treatment needed.
