During chemotherapy, cancer cells are killed using medication. Chemotherapy is often used in combination with radiation therapy to treat throat cancer. The two treatments are more effective when used together. Chemotherapy makes cancer cells easier to kill using radiation. However, using chemotherapy and radiation together increases the side effects a person will experience. Talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of chemotherapy with or without radiation.
