How do learning disabilities affect school performance?

It is not completely understood what causes learning disabilities, but the effects on school performance can be observed. In fact, it is often in school settings that learning disorders are first noticed, because many of the tasks common in school-reading, following directions, thinking abstractly, writing clearly-are the very areas people with learning disabilities have trouble with. Students with learning disabilities, as a result, often fall behind their peers in academic achievement. When this lack of performance in school is accompanied by normal development in other areas (for example, intelligence), a learning disability may be suspected
