Why do college students eat unhealthy foods?

Daphne Oz
Health Education
When you are in college, there is nothing quite so hard as resisting the urge to dive into that open bag of tortilla chips in college as you're pulling another all-nighter, watching the last basketball quarter, holding up the wall at a party, viewing the season finale of your fave TV show, or engaging in a life-defining discussion with your roommate. Deciding to eat something because you want to and are willing to allow yourself a small treat is one thing. Eating nutritionally devoid, fattening foods because you are trying to procrastinate, socialize, or are bored, and because "everybody else is doing it," is another. When you find yourself eating when you're not really hungry and without tasting what's in your mouth, you're eating for distraction. You've entered a danger zone.

However, these foods are commonly high in sodium and saturated fats. It is important to remember that one can still eat healthy at college! Some schools offer dorm menus online or the day before with nutrition information. If living in off-campus housing, creating a grocery list each week that incorporates a variety of foods from the five food groups can be help reduce unhealthy packaged foods, costs, and save time.
