On Dr. Oz: Best Weight-Loss Teas

Looking to lose weight? Then it’s tea time. The benefits of drinking tea are well known. Both black and green teas are rich in antioxidants that help fight heart disease and cancer. Many experts also recommend green tea as a weight-loss aid. But don’t stop there. There are other teas that can help you shed the pounds, including one that worked for Jessica Simpson. Sharecare natural medicine expert Bryce Wyldesays drinking these four teas -- at specific times of the day -- can be an important part of your weight loss program.

Start your day with a mug (or two) of Pu-erh tea from eastern China. Pu-erh contains an enzyme-activating ingredient that actually shrinks fat tissue. It also contains high levels of gallic acid, which is believed to inhibit the body’s absorption of fat. The tea is fermented and offers a light, smooth and slightly earthy taste. It contains half the caffeine of coffee, so you can enjoy an extra cup without getting the jitters. Jessica Simpson drank this tea as part of her well-publicized weight loss regimen back in 2010.

What should you drink at lunch to burn off the fat in that sandwich or fries? White tea. It has a smooth, delicate flavor that pairs well with just about anything, and it contains EGCG, which helps the body metabolize fat more efficiently and aids in blocking fat absorption. In addition to white tea’s weight loss benefits, it also contains L-theanine, which helps reduce stress while promoting concentration -- just what you need as you gear up for a busy afternoon. Try two cups with your mid-day meal.

Take an afternoon break and enjoy a cup of chickweed tea. This herbal tea with a light fruit flavor contains magnesium and potassium and works as a mild diuretic, helping you drop a bit of water weight and combat afternoon bloating. Chickweed tea’s mild laxative effect can help remove toxins from the body. Sip one cup per day.

Bilberry tea should be your evening tea of choice. Bilberries -- loaded with antioxidants -- help reduce blood sugar levels and taste naturally sweet, so a cup in the evening may keep you from reaching for that box of cookies calling to you from the cabinet. There’s no caffeine, so it’s ideal as a nighttime beverage. Drink one cup each evening.
