Symptoms of epidemic typhus typically include loss of appetite, headache, a rapid rise in temperature and malaise. A fever quickly develops, which is accompanied by chills and nausea. If epidemic typhus is left untreated, it affects blood circulation, resulting in spots of gangrene, kidney failure and pneumonia. Progressive heat exhaustion eventually can lead to delirium, cardiac failure and coma.
