How can I avoid catching swine flu (H1N1)?

The best way to prevent swine flu is to get vaccinated. There is a vaccination specific to swine flu (H1N1 flu), in addition to the regular seasonal flu vaccine. In people in certain risk groups, antiviral drugs may also be used to prevent swine flu.

In addition, you can avoid coming into contact with the swine flu virus by washing your hands regularly and staying away from large crowds when swine flu is widespread. Staying rested, getting adequate exercise, and eating nutritious food may also keep you from getting swine flu and other types of influenza.

You can prevent the H1N1 virus (originally called swine flu during the 2009 pandemic) by getting your seasonal flu shot. Ever since the 2009 pandemic, the vaccine available in the northern hemisphere (including the U.S.) has included that strain. You can also protect yourself from swine flu -- as well as from colds and other forms of the flu -- by following these good hygiene practices:
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water.
  • If there is no soap or sink available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth, and nose.
  • Steer clear of anyone who is sick.
  • If you become sick, keep those around you healthy by sneezing into a tissue and throwing it away, washing your hands frequently, staying away from others, and returning to work or school only after you have been fever-free for 24 hours.
