How are survivors of radiation poisoning treated?

Survivors of radiation poisoning remain at increased risk for physical and mental health problems. Certain conditions may not appear until several months or years after the initial illness. For example, kidney function may deteriorate after 6 months, cataracts may develop after two years, and cancer may occur 10 years or more after recovery. Similarly, psychological reactions may be delayed. Therefore, regular medical care and screening for signs of subsequent illnesses are important for survivors.
