What is fundoplication surgery?

This laparoscopic surgical procedure is performed under general anesthesia to treat the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus (gastroesophageal reflux disease - GERD). Making a small abdominal incision, the surgeon removes part of the esophagus and the remaining section is attached to the stomach.
Gary W. Falk, MD
Fundoplication is a surgical procedure where the upper portion of the stomach, called the fundus, is wrapped around the lower portion of the esophagus so that there is a smaller passageway from the esophagus into the stomach. This restricts the backflow of gastric acid into the esophagus so that the symptoms of GERD such as heartburn and acid regurgitation are alleviated. During the same procedure, the surgeon can repair your hiatal hernia which is also crucial in decreasing these symptoms. Fundoplication is performed when GERD symptoms, likely caused in part by a hiatal hernia, are not controlled well by medication. There are risks to any surgical procedure, but the greatest risks after fundoplication surgery are difficulty swallowing, excess gas, and the return of symptoms.
Fundoplasty for GERD prevents acid from entering the esophagus and reduces risk for esophageal cancer later. In this video, John Bagnato, MD, of Coliseum Medical Centers, discusses treatment for acid reflux.
