What complications are associated with vaginal mesh surgery?

The most common complication associated with vaginal mesh surgery is pain with intercourse, which can affect up to 30 percent of women. The second most common complication is mesh erosion into the vagina, affecting up to 10 percent of women. More rarely, the mesh can erode into other pelvic organs or cause chronic pain. Vaginal mesh surgery does have a lower prolapse recurrence rate, but the re-operation rate may not be different than native tissue repair because of complications that can occur with mesh placement.
