Some complications have been identified relating to the Bernese procedure. They include:

  • Femoral nerve palsy. This is the loss of sensation or movement in the leg caused by damage to the femoral nerve.
  • Intra-articular fracture. This is a break that crosses into the joint surface and results in cartilage damage.
  • Deep vein thrombosis. This happens when a blood clot, which usually starts in the leg, breaks off and causes a pulmonary embolism in the lung. This risk can be reduced by using blood thinners and tension stockings and moving after surgery.
