What are alternatives to lumbar microdiscectomy (LMD) surgery?

LLumbar microdiscectomy (LMD), which is a procedure to remove diseased or damaged disk material away from spinal nerves, is usually done after nonsurgical treatment options have failed. Alternatives to LMD can include:
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Traction
  • Spinal injections
  • Watching and waiting
Alternative surgeries have been developed to treat herniated disks, but none is as effective as LMD. If you feel your symptoms are not severe enough to have surgery, tell your doctor. He or she will respect your decision.
