What are alternatives to anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery?

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) surgery (a surgery to treat damaged or worn disks in your neck) is usually done after non-surgical treatment options have failed. Alternatives to ACDF can include:
  • Medications
  • Physical therapy
  • Traction
  • Spinal injections
  • Watching and waiting
If you feel your symptoms are not severe enough to require surgery, tell your doctor. He or she will respect your decision. Some patients with a diseased disk in their neck may be a candidate for an artificial disk.
