How should I manage pain after ACDF surgery?

To manage pain after an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF):
  • Talk with your doctor about how to manage the pain. Do not take any pain medication that your doctor has not prescribed. Do not take anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) because these medications slow bone healing.
  • Take your pain medication as soon as you need it. Don't wait for the pain to get too bad.
