How common is suicide among people with bipolar disorder?

Unfortunately, suicide is a very real concern for people with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Rates of suicide attempts in people with bipolar disorder have been documented to be as high as 50 percent, and lifetime rates for completing suicide are reported to be 60 times higher than for the general population.

Years ago, the generally published and truly horrifying statistic was that 20 to 25% of bipolar individuals ultimately died by suicide. However, there has been a substantial reduction in the suicide death rate in individuals with bipolar disorder with improved treatment. The 5% to 10% suicide rates that are now quoted seem to reflect that treatment is having a substantial impact on reducing suicide in those with bipolar disorder. That said, one suicide is too many, and even a 5% rate is approximately 30 times higher than in the general population.
