Because of the life-threatening conditions brought on by delirium tremens, there are no alternative treatments available during the emergency stage of treatment. Medications are necessary to control seizures, heart rate, and symptoms of the central nervous system. Once the condition has stabilized and withdrawal is complete, alternative treatments for alcohol abuse may be available. Rehabilitation programs and support groups are necessary for most alcoholics who are trying to quit drinking.
