Strokes require emergency medical attention. Bleeding or blockages in the brain can cause lasting damage, and the earlier a person receives treatment, the better their chances of survival. About 50 percent of people who suffer from a hemorrhagic stroke die within a matter of days or weeks. Even those that survive a stroke often experience permanent paralysis, weakness, or other problems.
