To prevent stage 4 rectal cancer, you should receive regular screenings for the disease. These screenings can detect rectal cancer at an earlier stage, and you can then treat the disease before it reaches stage 4. How often you need these screenings depends on your risk level, so speak with your doctor to determine when you should begin screenings and how frequently you should have them. Some lifestyle choices can decrease your risk for colon cancer, such as eating foods high in fiber such as fruits and vegetables. Whole grains also have a positive affect on the health of your colon and rectum. In cases where a genetic disorder poses a very high risk of rectal cancer, your doctor may recommend preventive surgery to remove part or all of the colon and rectum before cancer forms.
