A good strategy to prevent knee pain is to stretch your hamstrings, calves and hips such as the tensor fascia late(TFL). Static stretching is a good stretching technique.

Static Stretch for calves: find a wall and place your foot on the wall keeping the knee straight and lean toward the wall until you feel a mild stretch. Hold for 30 seconds. Do additional 2 sets holding for 30 seconds.

Static Stretch for Hamstrings: you can use a chair, place your leg on the chair. keep the leg straight and the foot pointing up to the ceiling, reach out toward your foot keeping your back straight until you feel a mild stretch. Hold for 30 seconds. Do additional 2 sets holding for 30 seconds.

Static Stretch for hips(TFL): kneel down in a lunge position. On the side that the knee that is bent and on the ground raise your arm up and lean toward the opposite side until you feel a mild stretch. Hold for 30 seconds. Do additional 2 sets holding for 30 seconds.

Leg extensions are not the best choice as an exercise to prevent knee injuries. They can place a lot of stress on the knee joint and only focus on one muscle group - the quadriceps. Better choices would be exercises that make the quadriceps, hamstrings, calves, and gluteal musles to work at the same time. Lunges, squats, and step-ups are other great choices you can try.
