Is a wider stance better for competition squatting?

Width of squatting stance comes down to many factors. Personal comfort, flexibility of joints, and strength of muscle groups all are factors to consider.  A wider stance  decreases the range of motion needed to achieve a parallel squat and return to your standing position, this alone can be an advantage in a meet, since it requires less mechanical work to lift the same amount of weight a shorter total distance. Many lifters choose a wider stance because they lack the proper flexibility in their ankle joints to maintain a proper biomechanical position and end up using their back muscles more than is advised. By going with a wider stance, the ankle is required to flex less and this allows the glutes and hamstrings to be activated more. The down side to a wide powerlifting stance is it places the hips, glutes, and low back in a position of greater mechanical load and sheering forces. This can increase the risk of trauma or injury to the hip, pelvis, and gluteal area. Take all of these factors into account when trying to decide how wide of a stance to employ when squatting for training and competition.
