Which tests at a sports combine evaluate strong someone is?

Bench press is one test that assesses strength, however, strength is a component of every drill at a combine. Being able to generate force in a low stance, recruiting multiple muscle groups to perform a complex skill, or recruiting the same muscles aggressively to move quickly and explosively are all deeply rooted in strength. Football linemen completing the vertical jump and long-armed receivers completing the bench press might demonstrate lower than expected results due to their unique physiology. These athletes are still strong and their strength is evaluated comparatively to their peers with this physiology in mind. The lineman, because they are moving much more mass, are actually generating more force even if they are not elevating as high during a vertical jump. Similarly, the long-armed skill position athlete is lighter and has to move the bar a lot further during the bench press than some of his peers with shorter limbs. A less than average number of completed repetitions in this case can still be noteworthy because a lot of force is generated with all variables being considered. The real proof comes out on the field when one of these individuals drive blocks or pushes an opponent - this is true functional strength.
