How important is cardio conditioning for softball players?

Cardio conditioning is very important for softball players.  Though there is a lot of down time in a softball game, you need to be ready to perform at a high intensity for short periods while generating this power from a stationary position.  Conditioning will help the body be able to handle these demands without causing injury.  The better shape you are in, the better your body will adapt to these stresses.  Your conditioning must first build a base, but should then mimic how you react in a game.  The conditioning should include base running and ball drills.  Pitchers will need additional cardiovascular training to increase the anaerobic capacity in order to sustain arm strength in the later innings. Pitching is not just in the arm, it is a total-body effort with leg strength and endurance being very important so as not to create additional stress to the arm and shoulders.
