Should we interpret the Bible metaphorically?

Some people argue that by interpreting the Bible metaphorically, we lose its authority. I think the opposite is true. Assuming the Bible is to be taken only literally, this leaves us, the readers, to determine what is divinely ordained. We end up having to decide what is relevant and applicable - and what we will or won't adhere to. There's not a single fundamentalist who follows the Bible exactly.

No one sacrifices young bullocks or turtledoves anymore, or stones their children for behaving badly. And it's not just the Old Testament that we fudge. When was the last time you met someone who "plucked out" his eye because it "offended" him? Certainly, when Jesus spoke about putting our "light under a bushel," he was speaking symbolically. But, who decides when Jesus meant what he said, or when he meant something else?
