Do different religions experience God the same way?

Lyle K. Weiss

Religion can be understood as an organized way of life developed in response to our encounter with what is perceived as Ultimate. Given the diversity of religion-founding experiences, different religions do experience the Ultimate in distinct ways. Some religious traditions, for example, have developed the notion of a personal God based upon their experiences of the Ultimate, whereas other traditions, particularly eastern traditions, emphasize the movement towards enlightenment rather than belief in a personal God. Given the diversity of experience of the Ultimate, each religious tradition identifies its own unique, privileged mediation of that experience, whether that is a set of scriptures, ritual celebrations, meditative practices, compassionate actions, or some combination of these. Each religion also possesses a rich history of reflection on both the character of the Ultimate and what constitutes an appropriate response to it. These religions possess elements unique to their tradition and elements they hold in common with various other religious traditions.

I taught world religions, and it was wonderful to see how similar all great religions experience the Divine. Whether it is the Bible, the Talmud, the Koran, the Upanishads, the Vedas, the I Ch'ing, or the Discourses of Buddha, the Divine is the wind blowing through us and behind us, urging us on to a better life.
