What are the different types of spinal cord injuries?

There are different types of spinal cord injuries. The types of problems that occur depend on which part of the spinal cord is damaged. A spinal cord injury can happen anywhere in the spinal cord, from the top of the neck down to the bottom of the back. If the damage is to the neck or upper back, messages cannot be sent to or received from most of the body. This can mean problems with breathing, loss of movement, loss of feeling in your arms and legs, and problems using the toilet. Not being able to move the arms or legs is called quadriplegia or tetraplegia. If the damage is to the lower back, messages cannot be sent to or received from parts of the body below the injury. This may mean problems moving and feeling the legs and problems using the toilet. Not being able to move and feel your legs is called paraplegia.
