Partial spinal cord injuries cannot be prevented altogether, although avoiding risky behavior can reduce the risk of these injuries. Alcohol plays a role in one out of every four spinal cord injuries. Violent encounters involving a gun or knife cause about 15 percent of them. Sports and recreation-related injuries account for about 8 percent of all spinal cord injuries.
