What fruit products should I avoid on the FODMAP elimination diet?

The FODMAPS elimination diet is based on limiting "FODMAPS" in the diet. FODMAPS stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides And Polyols. Specifically, some of the dietary carbohydrates described by the term FODMAPS are lactose, fructose, fructans, polyols and galactans. These are sugars, starches and fibers in food that some people cannot fully digest and absorb.

Please read labels carefully and avoid the following:

  • Fructose, high-fructose crystalline fructose corn syrup, or corn syrup solids (fruit drinks or cocktails, fruit jam or jelly, fruit-flavored candy, sauces such as ketchup, plum sauce or chutney)
  • Canned fruit packed in juice, not even allowed fruits
  • Fruit-juice concentrate (check energy or snack bars, fruit drinks or cocktails, fruit spreads, fruit gummies, frozen fruit bars, cookies, sweets of any kind with "healthy" or "naturally sweetened" label claims)
  • Coconut milk or cream (check Indian and Thai foods)
  • Fruit-juice based alcoholic drinks such as tequila sunrise, sea breeze, piña colada, mai tai, or daiquiri
