What are clear liquids?

Clear liquids are edible substances that are liquid at room temperature and the liquid is transparent. The liquid might be colored such as apple juice or solid when chilled such as gelatin or popsicles, but at room temperature it is liquid and transparent. Items classified as clear liquids include:
  • Plain water
  • Fruit juices without pulp, such as apple juice, grape juice or cranberry juice
  • Clear, fat-free broth such as bouillon or consommé
  • Clear sodas (i.e. ginger ale)
  • Plain gelatin
  • Honey
  • Ice pops without bits of fruit or fruit pulp
  • Ice chips
  • Tea without cream or sugar
  • Sports drinks like Gatorade
  • Pedialyte (electrolyte drinks for sick children)
Clear liquids do not include:
  • Milk
  • Orange juice
  • Applesauce
  • Pudding
