Superficial somatic pain is caused by stimulation of structures in the skin that sense pain (pain receptors). The word, cutaneous, comes from the Latin word cutis, which means "skin." It is with that in mind that superficial somatic pain is also called cutaneous pain. In fact, any combination of words that contains cutaneous refers to the skin, such as cutaneous nerves ("nerves in the skin") and cutaneous infections ("infection of the skin").
