What causes superficial somatic pain?

Superficial somatic pain occurs when structures that sense pain (pain receptors) are activated in the skin. Accordingly, superficial somatic pain is the pain that people feel when they injure the skin. Things such as abrasions, scratches, cuts, minor burns or frostbite, and superficial chemical injuries can result in superficial somatic pain. Illnesses such as some infectious diseases (i.e. herpes) can also cause superficial somatic pain.
