There are many causes of superficial somatic pain, and therefore, large numbers of people have it. It is common to all people and can be mild or severe. It has been estimated that over one-quarter of the population of the United States experienced at least one day of pain per month in 2006, and that 10 out of every 100 people have experienced pain lasting longer than one year. Chronic pain is responsible for more extended disability claims than any other condition.
