Sodium metabolism disorders, once resolved, generally do not pose lasting threats to quality of life. Especially in mild to moderate cases, most people are able to make a complete recovery once the underlying cause of the sodium imbalance is addressed. However, when the underlying cause of a sodium metabolism disorder is a terminal illness such cancer, or an illness requiring long-term management such as diabetes, quality of life may suffer even after the sodium imbalance is resolved. When sodium levels change rapidly, permanent brain damage can sometimes occur. Medical professionals do their best to avoid these types of complications.
