How do other illnesses affect social anxiety disorders?

Social anxiety disorders often occur with other mental illnesses. Substance abuse may occur as people self-medicate themselves in an attempt to alleviate social phobia symptoms. People may also have other anxiety disorders and depression in addition to their social anxiety disorder. These other ailments can interfere with the effective diagnosis and treatment of social phobia, so they should be identified during patient evaluation.
