Are social anxiety disorders serious?

Social anxiety disorders can range in severity from mild to life threatening. Some people may turn to self-medicating with alcohol or illegal drugs to alleviate their anxiety, and this can lead to substance abuse. Social anxiety can prevent a person from working, going to school, or enjoying healthy relationships with other people, so the effects of social phobia can be very serious indeed. Depression and suicide can also result from untreated social phobia.
