Eating fruits and vegetables are good choices for a low calorie snack to prevent weight gain. Combining a carbohydrate and protein will keep you fuller longer to avoid overeating at your next meal. Good options are 10 whole-wheat crackers and a slice of low fat string cheese. Another good option is celery sticks and 2 tablespoons of peanut butter. Snacks should not exceed 150 calories. Consult with a Registered Dietitian for an even bigger list of healthy snack options.

Snacking is a great way to prevent weight gain. Snacks can help keep your hunger at bay and keep your blood sugar from dropping. Try fresh veggies dipped in hummus, fresh fruit with low fat cheese or a handful of raw nuts. Smoked salmon with a dab of low fat cream cheese, capers and red onion on gluten free crackers makes a good snack. Turkey slices, avocado, sun dried tomatoes and low fat cheese make a delicious antipasto. Avoid sweets and refined baked goods. Also skip anything fried.

A "small" snack will prevent weight gain. Snacks between meals can help raise blood sugar, so that you feel satisfied. A "large" snack with too many calories could cause weight gain. You have to look at the total number of calories consumed in a day. Overall, fruits and vegetables make great snacks. They are low in calories and high in fiber to help you feel full. Remember, snacks with a lot of calories, could be considered a "meal", which could prevent weight loss.
